Overview
Since 1999, CIRPD has been proudly funding research projects. Over the past decade, CIRPD has given over $800,000* to doctoral and masters research. Since 2002, CIRPD has partnered with the Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR) through their Small Health Organization Partnership Program (SHOPP) to offer peer-reviewed training awards to cultivate and mentor new researchers interested in disability, injury prevention, and disability management.
CIRPD offers Training Awards to support promising young researchers interested in the prevention, diagnosis and management of common musculoskeletal problems and to facilitate training opportunities with leading researchers in the field.
In partnership with Auto21–Network Centre of Excellence, CIRPD also offers support to graduate students interested in improving car safety and injury prevention through the advancement of auto-engineering.
Specific areas of interest include: musculoskeletal disorders, whiplash, chronic pain and disability prevention. CIRPD gives special consideration to researchers who take an interdisciplinary approach and actively encourages researchers to collaborate with academics and researchers in other fields.

CIRPD and CIHR are collaborating to build a better understanding of the potential and/or relative risk of cancer on exposure to isocyanates. CIHR and CIRPD will provide funding for applications that are determined to be relevant to the following research priority areas described below:

- Assessing Exposures and Standards of Measurement
- Disease Processes
- Health Effects and Costs
- Policy and Regulation

Disability Prevention from Motor Vehicle Accidents

Summary
Cross discipline research is encouraged in the following thematic areas:
- Mitigating occupant injury and disability in motor vehicle collisions or automotive manufacturing
- Prevention of disability resulting from vehicular or automotive manufacturing injuries
The research focus must address one of the following areas related to the above themes:
- Advances in injury prevention
- Effective situational diagnosis and management
- Reliable and valid measurement tools to evaluate and improve safety design methodologies, and future research
- Effective research dissemination and utilization practices
- Evaluation of design, evidence formed methodologies or interventions targeted at reducing impairment and disability
